Course Description

This course is an introduction to Hypertext Markup Language. You will learn to create web pages using a text editor and publish them to a server using an FTP program.

Instruction

This course consists of lectures, in-class labs, assignments, exams, and a final project.

Requirements

Text: HTML for the World Wide Web 4th Ed. Visual Quickstart Guide by Elizabeth Castro

Editor: You do not need to purchase an html editor for this course. Notepad will work for all assignments.

FTP Software: In class we will use WS-FTP LE to transfer files to and from the computer and the server. [Free Download]

Disk: You may use a floppy disk or a zip disk in this course. It is recommended that you have two disks. One disk will be used as a back-up disk and the other disk will be used as a working disk. Do NOT forget to back-up you work regularly.

Email address: You may use your WCC email account.

Student account activated: You will do this in the first class.

Grading Policy

I will evaluate your performance based on satisfactory completion of two exams, weekly assignments and the semester project. Please be prepared to present your project to the class during the second to the last week of the semester.

Criteria for Evaluation

  1. Attendance and class participation: I expect you to attend class regularly. It is crucial that you participate in the in-class exercises and practice the techniques presented in order to master them. Please inform me of any anticipated absences.
  2. Assignments: You are expected to complete weekly assignments designed to reinforce the skills learned.
    • Deadlines: Assignments are due one week from the date assigned. I reserve the right to refuse late assignments. Please inform me in advance of the due date in class or by email of any problems you are having that prevent you from meeting the deadlines.
    • Uploading assignments: You MUST upload assignments to your server area on the WCC student server. I will not accept email attachments, floppy disks or printed assignments. You must obtain my permission to use any other server.
    • Submitting assignments: Once you have uploaded an assignment to your server area, you MUST inform me of its completion using the applicable assignment submittal form.
  3. I will provide you with instructions on how to comply with the above requirements during the first class.
  4. Tests and Quizzes: Two online tests covering technical information discussed in the lectures and contained in the Web based materials.
  5. You are encouraged to use the self-tests included in the Web based materials as a study aid.
  6. Project: Three page Web site with original content demonstrating understanding of concepts and techniques learned in the course. Your Website must contain the following elements:
    • Demonstration of proper planning, with attention to resolution and readability
    • Proper coding in good form
    • Functionality in both Netscape & Explorer
    • Demonstrated mastery of internal and external links
    • One table with proper cell spanning
    • One frameset with properly targeted links
    • One form
  7. Project Presentation: An informal presentation to share your ideas with the rest of the class. Be prepared to discuss the following.
    • Your site theme and inspiration. Is it fictitious?
    • Were there any other people involved?
    • Resources you discovered in the process.
    • Problems you encountered and how you resolved them.
    • How long did it take you?
    • Any advice you can give the class on what to avoid or what you might do differently.

Academic Integrity

In accordance with college policies, anyone caught plagiarizing (copying) the work of other students will receive no credit for the assignment in question. If the infraction is serious enough further disciplinary action will be pursued.
